Cyber attacks, the man-made disaster, now ranks in the top 3 risks for likely disruption to society. Only extreme weather and natural disasters are ranked higher.
The World Economic Forum (WEF) publishes the Global Risks Report which outlines the most likely and impactful global risks. This year, Cyberattacks ranked third for the most likely and quite high for the impact. The global risks report can be found here: https://www.weforum.org/reports/the-global-risks-report-2018 which analyzes survey data from almost a thousand experts.
We have come a long way. Less than a decade ago, cybersecurity was largely ignored. Now, it is headline worthy every day and the pace continues to increase. I believe it is a testament to our embrace of better technology, which always comes with accompanying risks. We must get better at understanding and preparing for how the next great tool may be used for good or harm. It is time to think more strategically in how to embrace the greatness of new tech, while minimizing the risks to an acceptable level. To paraphrase Sun Tzu, “do what is great, while it is easy”. It may be hard to believe, but we are still in the ‘easy’ phase. As this ranking predicts, it can get much more difficult.
